ACTION:
Choices of possible play in poker which
include fold, check, call, bet, or
raise.
AGGRESSIVE ACTION:
A large wager that has the potential to
allow a player to take the pot without
going to a showdown because other
players fold; also sometimes used as a
term for any very large bet or raise.
ALL-IN:
When any player bets all his or her
remaining chips during a hand, they are
said to be "all-in". They can continue
to bet but a side pot is created so that
their winnings are limited based on the
amount of their last wager
ANTE:
An advance agreed-upon amount required
to be placed in the pot before the start
of a hand by all players.
BET:
The act of placing a wager when your
turn to act; also a term referring to
the act of putting the chips into the
pot.
BIG BLIND:
The larger blind in games which use more
than a single blind, such as Hold'em.
BLIND:
A sum which is required to be placed
into the pot by a designed player or
players prior to dealing the cards which
is treated as a live bet.
BOARD:
(1) Term for the list which contains
names of players waiting for seating in
games. This list is managed by a casino
floor manager. (2) Those cards dealt to
poker players and placed facing up so
that they may be used by all players to
create hands in games in where community
cards are employed such as Omaha.
BOARD CARD:
In games that use community cards as
part of the game, like Hold'em, those
cards dealt facing up for all players to
see and share.
BURN CARD:
In order to make certain that no player
sees the top card of the deck
accidentally, after the first cards
are dealt, the next card on the top of
the deck is placed under a chip on the
table. This is called "burning a card";
and the card which is removed is called
the "burn card". This is also usually
repeated before each additional round of
cards are dealt
BUTTON:
A player seated in a position such that
they would be the dealer is a house
dealer or software-based dealer were not
used.
BUTTON GAMES: Any
of the variety of poker games in which a
dealer button or disc is employed.
BUY-IN:
The funds which is required to be paid
in order for a player to enter a
particular game.
CARDS SPEAK:
A rule stating that the
hand value is the actual value of the
cards, regardless of what spoken call
might be made by the player holding that
hand.
CAPPED:
In limit poker, the point
in the hand where the maximum number of
raises has been reached.
CHECK:
Term meaning a player waives the right
to initiate the betting but retains the
right to act later in that same wagering
round if a following player starts the
betting.
CHECK-RAISE:
Term which refers to a situation where a
player checks, then
calls a bet placed by another player,
and further raises that bet when action
returns to you
COLLECTION:
Money removed from the pot or from each
player and is often used as a way to
collect seat rental fees.
COLLECTION DROP:
A fee charged for every poker hand dealt
that is often used as a way to collect
seat rental fees in some venues.
COLOR CHANGE:
Asking for change chips of one denomination be
exchanged for chips of another
denomination.
COMMON CARD:
A card dealt facing up onto the table in
games of 7-card stud when there are
enough players that there are
insufficient cards to deal each player a
final card individually. That card is
shared by all players to build their
hands.
COMMUNITY CARDS:
Cards shared by the players;
see Board Card.
CUT:
Act of dividing the deck into
2 sections once the cards have been
shuffled so that the order of the cards
is altered.
DEAD CARD:
A card that can't be played legally.
DEAD COLLECTION BLIND:
An amount paid by that
player marked by the dealer button; this
is the way in which some establishments
obtain seat rental fees.
DEAD HAND:
A hand that is no longer legal to remain
in play.
DEAL:
To distribute cards to all the active
poker players, or to place cards facing
up onto the board. The term refers to
the entire process which begins with the
shuffling of cards, through passing out
cards, and ends after the pot is pushed
to the winner.
DEALER BUTTON:
A small plastic disc, many times white,
which is employed to indicate which
player \would deal the hand if a
dedicated dealer where not available;
commonly called, "the button."
DEAL OFF:
To play at a table for the period of
time required for a person to rotate
through the blinds and the button before
changing seats or leaving.
DISCARD(S):
In draw poker, to remove some cards from
your hand so that you can be dealt
replacement cards, or a term for those
card(s) that are removed from the
players' hands.
DOWN CARDS:
Cards dealt facing down to the players;
also referred to as pocket cards or hole
cards.
DRAW:
(1) A poker variation in which players
have the option of discarding and
replacing cards in their hand. (2) The
action of replacing discarded cards in a
hand in games which allow card
replacements. (3) The point during the
poker game when replacement cards are
dealt
FACE CARD:
Any Jack, Queen, King
cards.
FIXED LIMIT:
In limit poker variations, a structure
for betting where the amount of bets on
each round of wagering is pre-defined.
FLASHED CARD: A
card that is exposed accidentally, in
part or in whole, which must be
discarded.
FLOOR PERSON:
A casino employee responsible for
seating waiting players when a table
opens and who has authority make
decisions for the casino.
FLOP:
3 community cards that are dealt
face-up, all at one time, after the
initial betting in games like Omaha or
Hold'em.
FLUSH:
A hand consisting of 5 cards, all of the
same suit, no matter what rank the
cards.
FOLD:
To cease playing a hand, forfeiting all
monetary interest in that pot.
FOULED HAND:
A dead hand that can't be played
legally, often because a card has been
exposed.
FORCED BET:
A non-voluntary bet which begins first
round betting in some specific poker
games.
FREEROLL:
An opportunity to win anything without
risk or cost; used frequently to refer
to tournaments where no buy-in is
required.
FULL BUY:
A buy-in which is equal to or larger
than the minimum buy-in requirement.
FULL HOUSE:
Hand of any 3 cards of the same kind
combined with any pair.
HAND:
(1) A term for the cards any player is
dealt. (2) The 5 best of a player's
cards which are used for determining the
winner. (3) A term referring to the
poker deal from the process of the
shuffle through the push.
HEADS-UP PLAY:
Poker match where only two players are
involved.
HOLE CARDS:
Cards dealt privately, face-down to
players so that no other players can
see; pocket cards.
JOKER:
A "partly wild card" used in certain
games like high draw poker and
ace-to-five lowball. In high draw poker,
it is with aces, to create straights,
and to make flushes only. In lowball
games, it is used to create a pair with
the lowest unmatched rank in a hand.
KANSAS CITY LOWBALL:
A draw poker variation, called
deuce-to-seven, in which the best hand i
is 7-5-4-3-2 with no flush.
KICKER:
An unpaired card in a player's poker
hand that is the highest unmatched card.
KILL (OR KILL BLIND):
A larger than normal
blind, commonly twice the big blind
which increases the limit for the rest
of that hand. A kill can be voluntary or
mandatory, depending on the poker
variation being played and specific
situations. In many variations of poker,
the requirement for a kill is after
winning two pots in a row, or after
scooping the pot in a high-low split.
KILL BUTTON:
A button which is employed in lowball
games to designate that player who must
kill the next pot.
LEG UP:
Situation in which a player has won the
pot just past and, if the pot being
played is also won, that player will
have to kill the next pot.
LIVE BLIND:
A blind bet which gives the next to act
an option of calling the blind or
raising. This is treated like any other
live bet in that it can be raised or
called but not checked.
LOCK-UP:
A marker used in casino situations which
saves the seat vacated by a player when
he or she must leave the table for a
short period.
LOWBALL:
Draw poker variation where the lowest
hand win the pot rather than the
highest.
LOW CARD:
In 7-card stud games, that cards in the
up-cards which is lowest.
MISCALL:
An incorrect verbal statement of a
player's hand at showdown when the cards
actually have another value.
MISDEAL:
An error in dealing which causes a new
hand to be dealt.
MISSED BLIND:
Forced bet a player failed to be posted
when it was their turn, often because
the player was away.
MUCK:
Discarded cards which are generally
gathered in the center of the table,
face-down.
MUST-MOVE:
To protect the main game in tournaments,
players at other tables must move into
the first game as openings at the main
table appear.
NO-LIMIT:
Structure of betting in poker games
which allow bets of any amount including
all of a player's chips at any time.
OPENER:
That player which placed the first
voluntary bet in a wagering round.
OPENER BUTTON:
A button used to mark that player who
started the action in a pot which is
used in some draw games.
OPENERS:
In games that require jacks-or-better to
begin betting, those cards that prove
the hand qualified to be the one that
opened wagering.
OPTION:
To retain the right to raise a bet which
is given to a player who has posted a
blind.
OVERBLIND:
A non-mandatory blind that is bigger
than regular big blind, used to increase
the stakes proportionally. Also called
an oversize blind.
PASS:
Decline to place a bet; in pass-and-out
games, this is not the same as a check
because the player who passes must fold.
PAT:
A hand dealt in any draw poker variation
which is perfect when initially dealt
and no
draw cards are required.
PLAY BEHIND:
Having chips in play which are not
sitting on the table in front of you;
legal in situations where the player is
waiting for chips to be delivered which
they have already purchased; different
than table stakes.
PLAY THE BOARD:
To make
a hand from only the community cards
dealt to the board.
PLAY OVER:
To play poker while seated in a position
vacated while that seat's occupant is
away for a short break.
PLAYOVER BOX:
A plastic box used as a security measure
to protect chips of a player who has
stepped away while another player plays
over from that seat.
POSITION:
(1) Relation of a player’s seat at the
table to the blinds or to the dealer.
(2) The order of action in betting
rounds or receiving dealt cards.
POT-LIMIT:
A poker variation that has a wagering
structure where any player is allowed to
bet up to the amount of the current pot
at the time their wager is placed.
POTTING OUT:
Agreement created between players to
remove and spend some funds from pot,
often to buy shared food, cigarettes, or
drinks, or place side bets.
PROPOSITION BET:
A side bet completely unrelated to the
outcome of that hand.
PROTECTED HAND:
Securing your hole cards by
physically touching them with your
finger or placing a chip or other object
on top of them to prevent the
possibility of a fouled hand.
PUSHING BETS:
When 2 or more players at a table enter
an arrangement to return bets to one
another when one of them wins a pot in
which the other also played; also
referred to as "saving bets".
RACK:
Container used to hold chips in casinos
for transportation or while at the
dealer's position at the table.
RAISE:
To add an additional sum to
the amount of an open wager. In many
poker variations, this must meet certain
criteria and counts toward the limit
when there is a cap on the number of
raises permitted.
RE-RAISE:
To raise after someone else has already
raised, increasing further the amount
required for the next player to call the
wager.
SAVING BETS:
See "pushing bets".
SCOOP:
To win the high and low
ends of the pot in a split-pot game.
SCRAMBLE:
Action of mixing
cards face-down flat on the table rather
than shuffle.
SIDE POT:
A separate pot from the main pot which
is usually formed because one (or more)
players has gone all in. This is used
because it limits the pot the all in
players can win based on the amount they
wagered.
SHORT BUY:
A buy-in that is less than the normal
required minimum.
SHOWDOWN:
After all wagering has been accomplished
in the final betting round, the point
where players show their cards in order
to determine the winner of a hand.
SHUFFLE:
Mixing the cards before the deal by
cutting them into two sections and
allowing them to fall randomly into a
single stack.
SMALL BLIND:
In poker variations such as Hold'em that
uses two or more blind bets, the blind
that is the smaller sum.
SPLIT POT:
A pot that has to be divided. May be
necessitated by a tie for best hand,
because of the variation being played
such as high low, or due to an agreement
entered into prior to the showdown.
SPLITTING BLINDS:
When no player will bet after the blinds
have been posted, the player that posted
the blinds can agree to take their
blinds back instead of playing that
deal; known also as chopping.
SPLITTING OPENERS:
In high draw poker variations such as
jacks-or-better poker where there are
requirements for opening the betting,
this term refers to the situation of
holding the openers but electing to
divide them in hopes of making a
different type of hand such as splitting
aces to attempt to draw at a flush.
STACK:
Poker chips a player has
available on the table that they may use
to wager.
STRADDLE:
An additional blind voluntarily wagered
after the mandatory blinds are posted,
frequently 2 times the amount of the big
blind in a multiple blind game
effectively making a raise because any
following players pay the equivalent of
two wagers if they choose to call.
STRAIGHT:
Series of cards of sequential value such
as 3-4-5-6-7, no matter what suit the
cards.
STRAIGHT FLUSH:
5 cards of sequential rank that are also
of matching suit such as 3-4-5-6-7 of
Hearts.
STRING RAISE:
When a player
moves in more than one single motion
without announcing a raise before going
to the stack for more chips; not legal
play.
SUPERVISOR:
Employee of the gambling venue that has
authority to make decisions on behalf of
the casino.
TABLE STAKES:
(1) Money on the table which can be won
or lost on a single hand. (2)
Requirement in some poker games stating
players may bet only those chips in
front of them at the beginning of a
hand, buying chips only between hands.
"TIME":
To place a request to stop the action on
a hand stop momentarily, much like
asking for a "time out"
TIME COLLECTION:
A fee that must be paid in advance,
such as seat rental fees
TURN CARD:
The Fourth Street card in
poker variations such as Hold'em that
uses community cards.
UPCARDS:
Cards dealt to players face-up in
certain poker variations so opponents
can see but only the player can use them
to build their hand; used in stud poker
games.
WAGER:
Placing a bet or raise; also those chips
placed into the pot for betting or
raising.
